A regional Victorian city, 2 hours’ drive from Melbourne, is requiring a Permanent Consultant General Surgeon to join their University of Melbourne affiliated hospital.
The area boasts a diversity of cultural, outdoor and sporting activities seldom found anywhere else. Located only two hours north of Melbourne, the area features magnificent food and wine, glorious weather and all the attractions and activities you could imagine in a regional city. Golfers can enjoy some of Australia’s best and most challenging provincial courses with facilities second to none. Synonymous with food and fresh produce, it is little wonder the region is considered the food bowl of Australia.
It is a 280 bed multi-campus facility providing a broad range of hospital and community services to the region. With a catchment population of 160,000, it is the designated regional referral centre and regional trauma service. Its facilities include 210 acute beds, three operating theatres, a procedure room, a day procedure centre, an eight bed critical care unit, a state of the art simulation centre and an excellent library. The Hospital has 26,500 admissions, 7,800 surgical procedures, 1,200 deliveries and 34,000 Emergency Department presentations a year.
The six general surgeons are supported by anaesthetists, orthopaedic surgeons, obstetricians and gynaecologists and a urologist, all of whom are resident locally. There is additional specialist surgical support from visiting surgeons; general medicine support from locally resident physicians with a range of subspecialty interests; plus registrars, HMOs, interns and specialist nursing staff. The hospital is recognized by the RACS for advanced surgical training and is affiliated with The University of Melbourne. The University’s Rural Health Academic Centre, taking fourth, fifth and sixth year medical students, is co-located with the main Hospital campus. Consultants and HMOs participate in teaching medical students.
